How to Add a Link to an Instagram Story

Change is really hard. We get it. Who doesn’t like a life full of stability?!

However, change is how good things can happen. And one of the best changes has occurred recently with Instagram Stories – the ability to add links through Stickers.

Better still, you no longer need to swipe up.

Much like the swipe-up function (may it rest in peace), the sticker link feature was once only available for those accounts with more than 10,000 followers. But earlier this year that all changed.

That means you don’t have to have a huge following to take advantage of this feature to grow your account or drive traffic from the platform to your website.

It’s hard to ignore Instagram Stories – both at the top of your feed and just what it can do for your business. This feature on this popular social media platform is only going to continue to grow.

But be warned! Don’t overuse or misuse your newfound power or this feature could disappear for you as quickly as it has appeared.

Read on below and find out how Stickers can drive traffic to your website, improve your holistic digital marketing strategy, and continue to connect your brand with your audience via your Instagram profile account.

What was the Instagram swipe-up feature anyway?

First of all, if you’re new to Instagram – welcome! You’ve jumped on the platform at an opportune time.

So what exactly was this swipe-up feature that we’re referring to? It was an Instagram feature that enabled influencers and brands to reach their audience by adding links to their Instagram Stories through an arrow at the bottom of their screen.

And, you guessed it, the call to action read “Swipe Up”.

As mentioned, it was only available to accounts that were either verified, had over 10,000 followers, or both. For those who had this feature, there was no need to include the famous Instagram line of “click the link in my bio” in their content thus creating mass flexibility in their content.

In August of 2021, Instagram decided to remove the swipe-up feature and replaced it with Link Stickers for certain accounts but only recently made it available to every account.

What is an Instagram Link Sticker?

Now that we’ve discussed what the Instagram swipe-up feature is, we can get on with discussing what we’ve all come here for – the Instagram Link Sticker.

Instagram story stickers have been around for a while now and you may already be familiar with them in the form of music, questions, locations, polls, and more.

Now, there are stickers that allow you to add an external link directly to your Instagram Story without prompting people to go visit your bio.

This is particularly effective because you’re capturing their attention there and then, and driving it towards an immediate action that will only use one click.

Below we’ve featured some advantages that Instagram link stickers have over the old “swipe-up” link.

  • Users are already familiar with Stickers, so clicking on them shouldn’t be a foreign task
  • It keeps track of your metrics and optimises your click-through rate
  • Stickers allow Story views to engage with replies and reactions thus increasing overall engagement

How to Add a Link to an Instagram Story

If your Instagram account is a business or creator account, you can easily add links to your Stories. If it’s not either one of those accounts, then you need to change that.

These Link Stickers are much more visible than the old swipe-up button and can be added wherever you like in your Instagram Story.

Furthermore, it also shows the first part of your link URL in the sticker itself, allowing for more transparency about exactly where you’re sending viewers.

Here’s a step-by-step process of adding a Link Sticker to your IG Stories:

  1. Open the Instagram mobile app on your device, and press the blue plus sign on your Story profile picture or the plus icon on the top right-hand corner of your screen. It will be in amongst the Instagram live, reel & post options.
  2. Scroll through your gallery to select your Story or create a new Instagram Story directly.
  3. Once you’ve done this, press the ‘Sticker’ icon on the top of your screen. In the Sticker menu select the link sticker to use it.
  4. Pasted your desired link in the field.
  5. Change the text itself and text colour by tapping on the Sticker

And that’s it! Now all you have to do is wait for all that organic traffic to start pouring into your website from your Instagram Stories.

Honestly, if you’re a blogger in any industry, this is going to be an absolute game-changer for your website. No longer will you have to tell people to visit your bio to click through to your latest blog.

Nope. All you have to do is prompt them to read your blog through your Instagram Link Stickers which, if we’re honest, is a much more natural way of doing this.

Furthermore, what this will force you to do is re-think your entire Instagram strategy and split it up into a strategy for Stories and a strategy for your Feed.

And we honestly don’t think this is a bad thing whatsoever. Yes, it might involve a little more work for you but if it results in driving more awareness and traffic to your business, that also results in more customers, then that’s worth all the hard work.
